maybe it’s not so bad after all
An article published in the online version of New York Magazine, entitled “Columbia J-School’s Existential Crisis“ suggests that perhaps, in a roundabout way, me not getting into Columbia could be a blessing in disguise.
Why is that? Well, looking at things as an outsider, it may appear as if Columbia hasn’t prepared itself as well for the 21st Century as all other J-schools. I mean, I could see that as being possible, but I highly doubt the people running Columbia are dinosaurs, regaling students about how real reporting was done through stenography and typewriters. Perhaps they’re not the most modern of all j-schools–I for one was more impressed with the facilities I saw at NYU in comparison–but there’s simply no way Columbia is going down the tubes with the giants of industry, sinking on a ship built of hubris and reputation. For greater insight, I highly suggest taking a peek at the comments section of the article; I think my favorite line in the comments was “Congrats though, you finally crammed the word ‘existential’ into a story. This timely and revealing gem is bound for a prized spot on grandma’s fridge.” I love internet flaming and seeing Ivy League grads get pissy.
Though it has ruffled a few feathers, the idea of Medill 2020 is to counteract falling behind. The criticism there lies in the uncertain future of where journalism is going, and who is Medill to predict/dictate that? Either side of the argument is tough. I’m not going to pretend to be smart enough to understand any of it or to say who’s right.
I just know it’s fun listening to people call each other names.
