I try not to get too personal on this here blog.  Its intent is to give a glimpse into life as a grad student at Medill–not simply to be a forum for my brain sludge and/or musings.
I am breaking with that goal for today.
Today was a full day.  We held funeral services for my grandmother. [...]

On Friday, I was the “extra” web editor, meaning I was effectively in control of what showed up on the Medill Reports home page.
Things didn’t start out great.
Without going into details, the concept of “extra” web editor was new–and I was the very first to do it.  Needless to say, some quirks need to be [...]

My second story as a reporter was on universities reporting jobs created/maintained through stimulus money.  It’s a complex topic, and making it readable was a challenge.  I’m not incredibly pleased with how it turned out, given the time I spent on this, and many sources were uncooperative or ignored me altogether.  Still, it turned out ok.  I [...]

reporting

14 Jan 2010

I haven’t been updating lately.  I have been very busy.  The girl I was seeing ended our relationship.  My grandmother is going to die within the next three weeks.  I have begun reporting on a daily basis.  On my “light” day, I have three hours of class.
Regardless, I am enjoying reporting to a great extent. [...]

So come Wednesday morning, I thought I was coming down with a bug.  I awoke Tuesday with a slight sore throat and felt tired, but I attributed it to waking at 1 a.m. by my roommates visitors and not falling back asleep until 3 a.m.
Instead, I found myself warm per usual as I tried to [...]

On Friday, I weathered the elements (namely sideways rain, a Chicago staple) and went to my midterm review for my methods class.
When I showed up, my professor was running half an hour behind.  The guy scheduled for 4 p.m. was still waiting at 4:30.  I walked to Chipotle and wolfed down a burrito in the [...]

I know it’s a bit on the dramatic side, but please bear with me.
Saturday night was the last of our planned get-togethers before classes actually begin.  That said, it was a potluck, where bringing of drinks and food was par for the course.  It’s a good way to gather, I think.  I made buffalo chicken [...]

I moved in a couple of days before Labor Day.  While I didn’t have the foresight to actually attend the Jazz Festival (which is free, btw and takes place the entire weekend before Labor Day) I did manage to find a number of other events to occupy my time.  Basically, I’m looking for things to [...]

Amongst the various odds and ends of setting up an apartment and getting settled in, I’ve managed to make some friends and meet some people.  Let’s start from the top.
Last update, I had found the internet.  Around that same time, I started chatting with a number of people on Facebook chat.  I must preface this [...]

discoveries

6 Sep 2009

Yesterday, like Bill Curtis some time ago, I found the internet.  And cable.  Great stuff.
Today, I found a hammer–which is nice, because I was planning to purchase one–and a few other tools in my roommates room.  Now all I gotta do is finish cleaning the kitchen.  Bleh.
Overall, though, Chicago and my living situation has been [...]
